2008 Summer Internship Program

What is a Conservancy Internship Like?

As students pursue their education, there is a natural desire to experience the actual career work that they will be later pursuing.  An Internship is a formalized, structured method by which to gain this actual work experience and is often beneficial later to demonstrate to future employers that interest in the field of endeavor as well as certain field skills have already been learned.  The Catalina Island Conservancy offers such an opportunity.

The Summer Internship Program is designed to provide hands-on, field experience in conservation efforts such as the invasive plant program, native plant propagation, or interpretive education programs.

Interns must have either a Bachelor’s degree or have completed the relevant coursework of their bachelor’s program.  A valid driver’s license is required.

In return for the above educational and field experience, the student provides their services. The Conservancy does, however, provide other Benefits to facilitate the intern’s basic needs.

Prior to beginning a project, interns will participate in a formal training process to prepare them for a successful internship.  Interns will then receive specific training in their area of focus.  Each intern will work with one or two other interns in their program focus area alongside program staff.  Each internship will provide valuable “hands-on” learning while at the same time contributing to the management of the Catalina Island environment.

Interns will be housed at the Laura Stein Volunteer Camp in the interior of the Island. The Camp consists of platform cabin tents, hot water showers, flush toilets, and a complete outdoor kitchen.  The camp has one of the most striking views on the Island and at nights the lights of coastal Southern California are seen.

All intern positions are intended to reflect typical responsibilities and tasks as indicated in the Position Descriptions.  Actual tasks and responsibilities may vary and change over time.

The Conservancy is an “at will’ and Affirmative Action employer, offering equal employment opportunity without regard to race, color, creed or religion, age, sex, national origin or disability (within the requirements defined in the job description and those associated with remote island living).  Any offer of employment is contingent upon verification of the applicant’s eligibility for employment in the United States.  The Conservancy does not tolerate any form of Harassment.
