Airport Burn Vegetation Monitoring

Over 100 acres burned near the Airport-in-the-Sky early in 2003. Using knowledge gained from the Goat Harbor Fire of 1999, we built three deer exclosures shortly afterward to protect rare species which germinate following the burn and provide comparative data. Twelve point-intercept transects have been established within this burn in order to monitor the recovery of the chaparral habitat in this area. In addition, photo monitoring is being performed three times per year, and reconnaissance surveys are being conducted to search for rare plant species.

Schedule:
Vegetation transects will be read once per year for the first four years in the month of April. Reconnaissance will again take place in March, April, and May of 2004. Photo monitoring will be conducted in the months of March, July, and November for the first four years following the fire.
