Monitoring at Land Bird Points

ISLAND-WIDE PLANT COMMUNITY MONITORING AT LAND BIRD POINTS

Management Objective:
To maintain or increase the health of Santa Catalina Island's plant communities. Towards this goal, track the cover and species richness of these communities long-term throughout the island.

Monitoring Methods:
Eighty point-intercept transects have been established and read, each at pre-existing bird monitoring locations. Any additional plant species growing within a 30 by 5 meter area surrounding the transect are also listed, as in CNPS survey protocols. A subset of these transects are read every year and all transects are read every third year in order to track changes in plant communities island wide.

Collection Frequency:
Once per year in the months of March through June (each of eight routes are read in the same month each year).
