Rare Plant Population Searches and Mappings

RARE PLANT POPULATION SEARCHES AND MAPPING

Management Objective:
To maintain or increase the numbers of rare plant individuals and populations.

Methods:
The overall goal is to compile and maintain a current and complete map of selected rare plant species on the island. Existing rare plant location data has been compiled and standardized. Existing information will be obtained from Wrigley Memorial and Botanic Garden and Santa Barbara Botanic Garden botanists. Existing rare plant maps were distributed to appropriate Conservancy employees, on which they drew in locations not currently mapped. The Data Dictionary used with our Trimble GeoExplorer units to record appropriate information about each plant population has been refined. Ongoing efforts to map rare plant locations as they are seen continue. Focused searches will be conducted annually for particularly rare plants. In 2001, the Federally Endangered Pentachaeta lyonii was targeted, which has not been recorded since 1931. Suitable habitat in the general area of the original population was identified and searched by general reconnaissance. The plant was not located.

Collection Frequency:
Ongoing mapping efforts. Focused rare plant searches are conducted once per year within their blooming period.
