Santa Catalina Island has a wider diversity of animals than
most other southern California Channel Islands, due to its large size and proximity
to the mainland. It has the highest diversity of any Channel Island for reptiles
and amphibians, with 4 amphibians and 8 reptiles. Santa Catalina Island also
has the most introduced animals, in part due to its having the largest human
population.
Animal species brought here by people since European contact are considered
non-native. This is a selected list of both native and non-native animals found
on Santa Catalina Island. Eventually, the entire list of known animals will be
available on this site. Specific information on each animal may be found by clicking
on a animal's information icon.
