Plant
Species
Santa Catalina Island is home to some 400 native plants - those believed to have
found their way to the island without being transported by recent human activities.
While many of Santa Catalina Island's native plants are also found on mainland
California, there are a number of unique species that either occur only on Santa
Catalina Island (a Santa Catalina Island endemic*), or occur on two or more of
Southern and Baja California's offshore islands but not on the mainland (an island
endemic).
An additional 180 or so plants that arrived through human activities have
also established a roothold on Santa Catalina Island. These are considered non-native
plants. A list of the Island's native and non-native plants, along with specific
information on each may be found on the Plant Species pages
Conservation Actions
Plant conservation activities conducted through the Conservation Department
include the production of container plants and seeds in the native plant nursery,
restoration of degraded or damaged land areas, management of rare and endangered
plants, long-term plant monitoring studies, and the control of non-native plants.
