REGISTER FOR THE ANNUAL AVALON BAY CLEANUP
|
|
The most popular dive event in Southern California
Registration is now open for the 26 Annual Avalon
Harbor Underwater Cleanup on February 24, 2007.
The event was started in the 1970's by the local dive
community in an effort to cleanup Avalon Harbor, and
is the only time diving is permitted there.
"Last year we had more than 550 divers who had a
great time retrieving things from the harbor as well
as celebrating the event," said Jill Boivin, Dive
Chairperson.
"There are numerous parties around
town on both Friday and Saturday nights as divers
revel in the warm, friendly atmosphere of Catalina
Island. Several dive clubs also have made this event
one of their premier social events of the year," she
added.
The proceeds of the Avalon Harbor Underwater
Cleanup benefit Catalina Conservancy Divers and the
Catalina Hyperbaric Chamber.
Catalina Conservancy Divers is a support group of
the Catalina Island Conservancy.
The Catalina Hyperbaric Chamber is a life support
recompression chamber on Catalina that is available
to serve the thousands of divers who frequent the
Catalina waters.

BASIL POLEDOURIS, NOTED COMPOSER LOVED CATALINA
|
|
Known for "Lonesome Dove" and "Free Willy"
When ardent supporters of the Conservancy pass
away, but want to be remembered through
contributions in support of the mission of the
Conservancy, their request honors the Island that we
all love.
Some members who have asked for in-memory gifts
include Bob Unvert, Hank O?Melveny, Millard Rosing,
and just last month, Thelma Geiger.
This month, Basil Poledouris, a composer whose
sweeping score for the TV miniseries "Lonesome
Dove" won him an Emmy and who became known for
the bold orchestral sounds he brought to such films
as "Conan the Barbarian" and "The Hunt for Red
October" died of cancer. He was 61.
Basil became renowned for his powerfully epic style
of orchestral composition and his intricate thematic
designs, and garnered attention for his scores for
such other movies as, "RoboCop," "Free Willy," "For
Love of the Game," "Crocodile Dundee in Los
Angeles," "Wind," "Les Miserables," and "Flight of the
Intruder." A graduate of USC's music and film school,
he scored over 80 movies and television episodes.
He also composed and conducted the opening
ceremonies for the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.
Basil loved Catalina. Many of his musical scores were
composed on his sailboat while moored at the Island.
His excitement and enthusiasm for life showed boldly
when sailing to the Island and when taking a Jeep
tour through the Island's rugged and beautiful
interior.
Because of his love of the sea and Catalina, his wife
and two daughters asked that in lieu of flowers,
contributions be made to the Catalina Island
Conservancy.
