COURSE CATALINA

Sponsored by a generous grant from The Boone Foundation.

Since 1995, hundreds of students, parents and teachers have journeyed across the sea for a unique discovery adventure: Course Catalina. Elementary and junior high students from the Los Angeles area who are chosen to participate in Course Catalina are in for an into, through and beyond educational experience. To prepare for their trip, students research the island and its natural systems. Once on the island, students are whisked away from the small town of Avalon and into 76 square miles of wilderness. Here the discovery begins as students witness the geological history of the island, make observations at the Nature Center and look scientifically at Little Harbor's ecologically sensitive areas. Located only 20 miles from home, Catalina seems like it's a million miles away. However, students learn that the world is made up of interconnected systems and what they do at home has worldwide effects.
