Catalina ISLAND
Investigations Stimulating Learning About Natural Diversity
|
| Engaging environmental themes breathe life into academics, providing the
relevance that motivates students to learn. Designed for our local students
in Avalon and Two Harbors, lessons inspire learners to become deeply interested
in life on the island, to ask good questions, and to develop the skills necessary
to answer those questions. Lessons are student-centered, interactive, and
hands-on. |

SOS: Save Our Soil! Fourth Graders at Avalon School participate
in a soil erosion lab to learn how plants help to improve and protect soil. Then
they take the bus into the island's interior to place "recycled" Christmas
trees in eroded gullies. The dry trees (ornament and tinsel free) become soil
catchers. By next spring, grasses begin to re-vegetate the erosion-damaged area.
Christmas Tree Recycling and SOS: Save Our Soil are part
of the Conservancy's environmental education program for Avalon Schools.
