The Laura Stein Volunteer Camp is located approximately 5 miles west of Avalon,
near Haypress Reservoir. It is isolated among Coastal Scrub Oak and Lemonade
Berry groves overlooking the Catalina Channel with views of the Palos Verdes
Peninsula. As the camp is perched 1,300-feet above the Pacific Ocean, the only
beach access throughout your stay is while you are in Avalon.
The site is composed of two canvas-sided tents on raised decks. Each tent
contains eight padded bunk beds. There are picnic benches, umbrellas, bathroom
facilities (flush toilets), hot shower and potable, running hot/cold water. The
outdoor kitchen is equipped with a propane barbecue, a two-burner stove, cookware,
plate ware, and eating utensils. There are also food storage containers, coolers
and ice provided to store perishable foods. The camp is supplied with environmentally
safe cleaning supplies and paper products, which all campers are requested to
use.
Solar energy is provided at the camp for minimal lighting in the tents (additional
lanterns are provided). There is no electricity supplied to the camp so please
leave electrical appliances at home. Outdoor furniture is available to sit on
around the campfire in the evenings and there are a variety of games and natural
history books for volunteers to enjoy. Please see What
to Bring for more details on what you will need during your stay with us.
You can help us, the Catalina Island Conservancy, in all efforts to reduce
our impact on the environment. We print our publications on high post-consumer
content recycled paper, the camp offers a recycling bin, we supply paper towels
and toilet paper made with recycled fiber content. You can help us to reduce
human impacts on the island by reusing lunch containers, purchasing food items
in bulk, not bringing disposable eating utensils and paper plates, and of course
picking up waste and litter that has been left behind by others.
Telephone service is available directly across from the camp entrance, at
Haypress Reservoir. It requires a calling card or may be used for collect calls.
In case of an outside emergency, contact can also be made to the camp by calling
the Conservancy House (310-510-2595) during regular business hours, 7 days a
week.
Camp Cleanup
On your final day at the volunteer camp, your will be required to clean the
campsite, leaving no traces. You will have a cleaning checklist to aid you in
clean up. We appreciate your assistance as the Volunteer Camp is a temporary
home to many volunteers and everyone appreciates a clean camp. Please report
any problems with equipment to Conservancy staff and return all loaned items. |
