Wildfire Prevention Tips

Do your part to protect Catalina’s wildlands. Follow these tips to reduce human-caused wildfires and keep the Island and its wildlife safe.

Campfire Cold
Before You Go.

Douse, stir and repeat until the ashes are cold to the touch before you leave.

Cook Smart

Use a camp stove with the flame kept low in designated campground cooking areas.

Windy? Skip the Flames.

Avoid campfires or barbecues on windy days. Even a tiny ember can travel far and wide and ignite dry grass and brush.

Create a Personal
Fire-Safe Zone

Clear at least six feet around your campfire or stove with no dry grass, leaves or gear nearby.

Flames Out on Red Flag Days

All open flames are banned Island-wide during Red Flag Warnings.

No Smoking. Ever!

There is absolutely no
smoking allowed in the
Island’s wildlands.

No Fireworks Allowed.

Fireworks, including sparklers, are strictly banned on Catalina Island.

Don’t Burn Debris

Never burn leaves, trash or debris and dispose of waste at designated areas.

Gear Check Before You Trek!

Secure loose equipment like chains on vehicles and trailers that could create sparks.

Grass Isn’t Your Garage.

Hot exhaust pipes can ignite dry, invasive grass. Only drive and park on clear roads and pullouts.

Carry a Fire Extinguisher.

Keep a small fire extinguisher in your vehicle and be prepared to respond to small fires quickly.

Don’t Blaze New Paths.

Stay on designated hiking and biking trails to avoid disturbing fire-resilient native plants.

Glass and Grass Don’t Mix.

Don’t leave glass bottles on the ground which can act like a magnifying lens and ignite dry grass.

Check Fire Restrictions.

Always check current fire danger and restrictions before heading into the wildlands.

Report the Smoke.

If you see smoke or an unattended fire, call
911 or contact a Conservancy ranger.
