REGI

The Rose Ellen Gardner Internship (REGI) began in 2004 to serve Avalon High School students and to help guide them in their career goals. The program was named after, and to honor, retired Catalina Island Conservancy President, Rose Ellen Gardner, herself a graduate of Avalon Schools.

Students apply for the program and supply recommendation letters from teachers (or other adults qualified to speak to their qualifications). Each applicant is then interviewed and the students are chosen based on their overall performance. Typically, this program serves four students per summer.

During their term of service to the Conservancy, students learn about the work of the organization by working alongside Conservancy employees as they complete their daily tasks. Student participants are given opportunities to work in a variety of Conservancy departments and to assist with various field projects. These might include, but are not limited to:

• Trail Repair and Signage
• Fence Work
• Invasive Plant Removal
• Native Plant Nursery Care
• Botanic Garden Upkeep
• Plant Ecology
• Wildlife Biology
• Facilities Maintenance
• Communications
• Administration

Ideally, students that complete the Rose Ellen Gardner Internship will want to return to work for the organization as a career choice, or will choose to pursue a college career in science, conservation, or a conservation-related field.
