FACT OR FICTION?

Peregrine falcons the world’s fastest birds.

It’s true – as long as we’re talking diving speeds. In this category, Peregrines are actually considered the fastest animal in the world, capable of reaching speeds in excess of 200 miles per hour! Check out this very cool video from the BBC to get a birds’ eye view:

If you watch to the end, there’s also a great video of the goshawk, an accipiter, flying through the woods. While we don’t have goshawks here, this gives you a terrific sense of why our accipiters – the Cooper’s and sharp-shinned hawks – benefit from those shorter, palm-like wings for maneuverability through the brush.
