CONSERVANCY COMMUNICATIONS

A MESSAGE FROM THE CONSERVANCY: Updated 3/27/2020

Thank you all for your patience during this evolving COVID-19 situation. The Catalina Island Conservancy continues to strive to be a responsible steward of our lands, staff and visitors. As we monitor the latest updates from the CDC, WHO, State of California, LA County, and the City and business community of Avalon, we are trying to make sustainable, collaborative decisions for our island and community. The Conservancy takes the health and safety of the public, staff and residents very seriously.

Effective Friday, March 20, 2020 the Conservancy visitor facilities and services will be mostly closed to the public.

We plan for this public closure to continue through Thursday April 30, 2020.

CLOSED:
  • Trailhead, including Toyon Grill
  • Eco Tours of the Interior
  • Nature Center - An Educational resource
  • Wrigley Memorial and Botanic Garden
  • Airport public facilities (manager present for landing aircraft)
  • DC-3 Grill take out only (full closure effective 3/22)
  • Wildlands Express shuttle (Avalon to Two Harbors)
  • Campgrounds

HIKING AND BIKING:
  • Effective March 27, 2020 LA County has closed with enforcement all Hiking Trails, Beaches and Piers in the county.  LA County Sheriff will help enforce the closure across LA County which includes Catalina Island.  This includes the piers adjacent to Conservancy Property at various camps and yacht clubs. We do not encourage travel to the Island at this time.
Walking on primary roads, labeled in brown on the Conservancy's map, is permitted. We do urge that you use extra caution as these are also primary roads for vehicle traffic. We also urge drivers to slow down and be extra cautious.
  • No services or food available other than markets in both Avalon and Two Harbors.
  • Please be aware that Catalina Express will be moving to a reduced schedule effective 3/19, with no boat service to/from Two Harbors after Sunday, 3/22.
  • Rangers will remain on patrol of the interior of the Island

In addition, all  group educational activities, Naturalist Trainings and the Last Friday Lecture Series, have been cancelled for March and April.  Conservancy Events including the Ball and Thad and BZ Jones Hikes have been postponed until further notice.

EVENTS & PROGRAMS:
• The Catalina Island Marathon, originally scheduled for March 14, has been rescheduled for August 29th.
• The Last Friday Lectures for March and April have been cancelled.
• All Naturalist Trainings have been cancelled through April.
• The Thad & BZ Jones Hikes, scheduled for March 20 and 21, have been postponed.
• The Catalina Island Conservancy Ball, scheduled for April 25, has been postponed.
We know how many of you cherish Catalina Island and the respite that nature provides.  Your support and understanding during this public health crisis is appreciated.

We look forward to all of us being able to enjoy Catalina Island again soon and hope to share with you our dedication to our mission of conservation, education and recreation.
