Thad and BZ Jones Hikes

Join the Catalina Marineros for two great hikes on March 23 & 24, 2018.  Honoring brothers Thad and Graham "BZ" Jones, the late world-class sailors and dedicated Conservancy supporters, the two-day Thad Jones Trans-Catalina hike or the one-day BZ Jones Cross-Catalina hike will explore the gorgeous terrain for a weekend of exploration, mixing, and mingling.  A post hike celebration dinner at Overlook Hall in Avalon, will await you Saturday evening.  See below for registration.

BZ Jones Hike - 1 Day Hike from Quail Valley to Haypress
March 24, 2018

The BZ Jones Hike provides a challenge to share with new and old friends. This year, we have a new route from Quail Valley to Haypress Reservoir, where you'll meet up with the Thad Jones hikers for a picnic lunch. The 9.5-mile hike follows jeep roads through Bullrush Canyon up to Renton Pass Road, and finishing along the Trans-Catalina Trail. To participate in the hike, you should be fit and ideally hike or take long walks regularly.

The BZ Jones Hike starts by boarding a bus in Avalon, and finishes at Gallagher's Beach where you'll board boats for a fun ride back to Avalon. After you have freshened up, rejoin your fellow hikers for an awards party and celebratory dinner at Overlook Hall.

Limited to 80 hikers. Registration fee is $185.00 for non-members and $165.00 for Conservancy members, and includes bus transportation, lunch at Haypress, celebratory dinner, official hike t-shirt, and $50 donation. Plan to stay in Avalon overnight on Friday, March 23, and Saturday, March 24.  Registration is now open, see below.

Thad Jones Hike - Two-Day Trans-Catalina Hike (SOLD OUT)
March 23-24, 2018

The 30-mile Thad Jones hike starts with boarding transportation in Avalon on Friday, March 23 to Emerald Bay.  The trail leads East to Two Harbors where you can take a break for lunch, then onto Little Harbor via Banning House Road and spectacular single track ridge trails. Participants will camp overnight at Little Harbor and enjoy a BBQ dinner with fireside sing along. No need to carry your camping gear on the hike; drop it off in Avalon Friday.  It will be delivered to Little Harbor Friday afternoon and returned back to Avalon for you to pick up Saturday afternoon.

Saturday morning, hikers depart Little Harbor at 0600 to Airport in the Sky via Big Springs Ridge Trail, then onto Haypress to meet the BZ Jones hikers for lunch, passing Blackjack Mountain near the Island's highest point. Catered lunch with BZ Jones hikers at Haypress Reservoir is then followed by a short downhill hike to Gallagher's Beach where you'll board boat for the short voyage back to Avalon harbor.  After you have freshened up, rejoin your fellow hikers for an awards party and dinner at Overlook Hall. You will need to stay in Avalon overnight Thursday, March 22, and Saturday, March 24.  Reservations for the non-consecutive 2-night stay can be made with the Catalina Island Inn.  Let them know you are participating in the Thad Jones Hike for the best rates: 310-510-1623.

Limit 24 hikers (NOW FULL).  Registration fee is $285.00 for non-Conservancy members and $265.00 for Conservancy members, which includes transportation from Avalon to the west end, camp fees, BBQ dinner at Two Harbors, lunch at Haypress, celebratory dinner, and official hike t-shirt. Also includes gear haul to and from Avalon, so only a small backpack is needed on the hike. Hikers will buy their own lunch at the Isthmus on Friday, and their breakfast at the Airport on Saturday. Registration for the Thad Jones Hike is closed, sold out 1/8/17.
